A DISASTROUS PLAN
I stepped into the air plane, grinning from ear to ear. I was happy that I could finally go to New York, the city I had always wanted to visit. My best friend, Edmund was going with me. We were given permission to go there because we did well in our O’ level exam. A steward took us to our seats. We smiled when we found out that, were going to sit together.
After half an hour, the airplane started to depart and take us to New York. Edmund and I were very excited. We started to talk eagerly about what we’re going to do there and celebrities we might encounter there. At that moment negative thought did not strike us.
After a few hours of exciting chat, I yawned and dozed off. Suddenly, I heard a loud announcement through the speakers. “Ladies and gentlemen, we’re sorry to inform you that the airplane is having some problems. Please make sure that your seat belts are fastened. Thank you”
I blinked my eyes a few times. The point of that piece information was not really absorbed fully in my mind. Suddenly, the airplane shook one side to side. People started to scream and yell. I must have looked flabbergasted because Edmund clutched my hand and told me not to worry. I looked out the window, trying to get some clues of what was happening but all I could see from the airplane was a piece of huge green land. The piece of green land was getting bigger and bigger as seconds passed by and I had a premonition that our airplane was going to crash onto it. Automatically I shut my eyes. The next thing I knew was that I heard a loud crash and blacked out.
“Wake up,” Edmund shook me. “The airplane might explode any minute now; we must get out of here immediately,” he said worriedly.
He quickly led me to the exit but we could not find any of them. The door outside was locked. Since I did not know what to do, I just followed him around the airplane, waiting for him to solve the problem. He was very reliable; he always knew just what to do. He saw a tool box and rummaged through the tools inside. Finally, he found a hammer and ran to one window. “This window is too small for us to get out,” he said. “I think we should try the windows at the cockpit.
At the cockpit of the airplane, Edmund broke into one windows and he climbed down the airplane. I hesitated and said, “We must have essential things in order to survive out there. I will go back and grab things that I think we would need”
I disappeared into the airplane. I quickly opened the compartments and withdrew our backpacks from it. I ran back to the cockpit and threw backpacks to Edmund. “I will go and grab some drinks,” I told him.
I went to the kitchen of the airplane and I saw boxes containing a dozen bottles of mineral water. Without wasting anymore time, I carried the box and ran to the cockpit again. I threw the box to the ground and Edmund helped me to get down from the airplane. Once outside the airplane, I looked around and all I could see was trees. I was wrong. The place was much more than just a piece of huge green land; it was actually a huge jungle! I thought I was going to faint. I seemed so small and fragile standing there, facing all those tall trees. I started to tremble and gripped Edmund’s arm for support.
“Eddie, I want to go home,” I sobbed.
“Hey, don’t worry. Everything’s going to be fine. I will help you to get through this. I know you’ve never been to jungles before but I know what to do,” he assured me, squeezing both my hands.
I smiled weakly, the sky was getting dark. I checked my wristwatch; it was already seven in the evening. Edmund took out torchlight. “Just follow me. Don’t worry, I will hold your hand and lead you to the right place,” he said, smiling warmly.
Edmund shone his torchlight through the darkness. He started to lead me through the trees and I squeezed Edmund’s hand harder this time. “Don’t worry. Those are animal and insects sound. They are actually welcoming us to their world,” he tried to convince me.
After what seemed like an eternity, he finally found a shelter. The shelter looked uncomfortable to me because it looked as if we would have to sleep on a fallen trunk but Edmund told me that someone must have been there before because the shelter was quite complete with a few large leaves surrounding the trunk and covered the top like a roof. I did not care much as I was too tired: I was actually exhausted because I had never walked that far in my life. Edmund volunteered to sleep on the trunk so that I would feel much comfortable sleeping on top of him.
I woke up in the middle of night because I was very thirsty. I did not have enough strength to open the box of mineral water so I woke Edmund up and he helped me to open it. Both of us were starving so we fished around in our bags for some food that we had brought home. All we could find were chocolates. Anyway, eating chocolates were our hobby. I felt so much better after eating and drinking but I could not helped myself from thinking that I would never see my family again. I started to cry my heart out. Edmund moved closer to me and hugged me protectively. He was so brave, he made me feel secured around him, but I ended up crying myself to sleep.
“Look who are these people?” I heard a voice ask.
I woke up and saw two men standing before Edmund and me, blocking the glare of sunlight. I quickly woke Edmund up and checked my wristwatch; it was already nine in the morning. “Why are you two sleeping here?” asked a man who seemed to be full of curiosity.
“We are lost,” Edmund spoke up. “We were actually heading for New York but the plane crashed and we were afraid that it might explode so we ran away from it.”
“Oh dear. We are sorry to hear that. Actually, we have heard this news already but rescuers were sent to rescue those people inside the airplane. Oh! So you are the two missing teenagers!” exclaimed another man.
“Yeah I guess so. Can you tell us where are we now?” I asked.
“You are now in the jungle which is located near the South China Sea,” he said.
“Can you take us home?” Edmund asked.
“Of course but we are from Malaysia so we’ll take you two to the police station of Malaysia and I’m sure the relevant authorities will send you two back to Brunei,” he said.
“How do you know we are from Brunei?” Edmund asked.
“Of course I know. The news of you two shook the whole of Brunei. I am sure that your parents are worried sick about the two of you so now the two of us are going to be your heroes,” he said smiling.
We started to walk through the jungle but this time I felt much better because I knew I was going home. The two men told us that they were actually there to hunt and our shelter was theirs. Approximately after two hours, we reached a waterfall. We took a rest there. I wanted to go to toilet so one of the hunters told me where the toilet was. It was not that far from the waterfall. Edmund accompanied me there. Once inside the toilet, I heard a loud roaring sound from outside. “Eddie?” I called.
When Edmund did not respond, I quickly ran outside to see what was happening. To my horror, I saw a tiger tried to attack Edmund. “No!” I yelled.
The tiger turned to face me. It was only two meters away from me. I screamed as if that would scare it away. Instead, it approached me, looking both hungry and angry. I panicked; I could not hear any other sound except for the tiger’s loud roaring and my loud scream but I knew Edmund was yelling something. The tiger moved closer to me. Within seconds, it leaped through the air in my direction. I closed my eyes, hoping the ground would swallow me right that instant. Suddenly, I heard a loud shot in the air from another direction. I opened my eyes and saw the tiger lying in front of me. Edmund rushed to my side. “Thank God you’re all right,” he said, hugging me tightly like he would never let go.
I did not respond because I was too shocked. The two hunters ran to me and they took me back to the waterfall. Edmund explained to me that the tiger was shot by one hunter while it was trying to leap on me. After that, we started our journey through the jungle again. After a while, we reached the hunter’s boat and climbed into it. We sped off through Malaysia after making sure that we had brought everything that was needed for our journey in the boat. The journey did not take long. We arrived at the port of Malaysia after two hours and they took us to the police station immediately. The two police officers asked us some questions and made some phone calls. It was probably because they wanted to make sure that we were the two missing teenagers. We were taken back to Brunei soon after that by an emergency plane. When we reached Brunei airport, we were so happy because we were finally back in Brunei again. At the arrival hall, a bunch of reporters were running towards us. “Who saved you two?” was the last thing I heard because I fainted after that.
When I woke up, the first person I saw was my mother. She told me that I fainted at the airport and the doctor said it was because I was too weak and I had not eaten much the day before. I was still happy because I could finally see my mother again. Even the hospital bed felt so soft like a feather.
After that, Edmund came in. “How are you feeling? Do you still want you go New York?” he asked trying hard not to burst out laughing.
I just shook my head and stuck out my tongue playfully. Even until today the thought of going someplace in airplane makes me shiver.
